About me
Jerry Cox is a Sculptor, Photographer and Painter
Jerry Cox is a St. Louis Missouri native, Graduating from Lindberg High in 1974. Received a BFA from Westminster/William Woods in Fulton MO in 1978, with concentrations in Sculpture, Watercolor, Photography and Drawing. I won 1st prize in the Columns Bluejay Annual Photography Competition in 1976, in my third year of college, which inspired me to pursue photography throughout my professional career.
Soon after Graduation I found himself working with a local collector/restorer of slot machines and Jukeboxes. I carved “One Arm Bandits”; life size figures with a slot machine for a torso. I also remade parts, re-cast lost and broken aluminum parts.
In 1981 I started cabinetmaking, furniture reproductions and antique restoration for Floyd Cook Restorations. There I discovered an area within the furniture making realm called, “Furniture as art”. This is defined as furniture more as a functional sculpture, built to the best quality standards. Through the 40 years in my main profession, I have been pursuing the craft of Furniture as Art along with Wood sculptures using furniture making techniques.
Also during the ‘80’s and early into the ‘90’s I focused on landscape watercolors. Starting in the mid ‘80’s with the purchase of a medium format Pentax 67 Camera, I Focused (excuse the pun) in photography over the watercolors. Around the year 2000 I decided to focus on sculpture and the area called Craft Wood, wood turnings or derived from turnings. Early in 2023 I changed my occupation to full time sculptor working in my 1600 sqft studio surrounded by the rolling Ozark hills, about 30 miles south St. Louis Missouri.
Artist Statement
I let classic iconic concepts evolve into stylized designs that give a narrative. In my Sculpture I usually invoke some Sci-fi theme, or narratives about my Christian walk, sometimes subtlety and sometimes blatant. I work mostly in wood, combining turning, carving, construction, and assemblies. My work is highly refined and finished to the best of my woodworking abilities. I choose subjects for their challenges to learn some new technique.
